Local powerlifter and fitness guru, Krista Schaus, is working her way back to the Commonwealth Championships again, this time in Fiji in December 2007. The 33 year old Kohler resident qualified for Nationals this past weekend with a 332.5 kg total at the Ontario Powerlifting Championships in Belle River near Windsor. In order to have a chance at being invited to represent Canada on the Commonwealth team next year, Schaus must compete in the National championships in March 2007 in Halifax. Having far surpassed the Class III qualifying standard for her weight class this past weekend, she is now one step closer.
Schaus was pleased overall with her performance on Saturday in Belle River. She competed in both the bench press competition and the 3-lift meet. She took home a gold in the bench press at 60 kg weight class with a personal best raw bench press of 72.5 kg (160 lbs) (raw - without the assistance of a supportive bench press shirt). A few hours later, she had to weigh in again for the 3-lift event involving the squat, bench press again and the deadlift which resulted in a 1 kg increase in her weight moving her up into the 67.5 class. Having never lifted in the heavier weight class and lifting in the bottom of that class, Schaus competed against lifters as much as 15 lbs heavier than herself. The current National 67.5 kg champion, Jennifer Porter of Hanover, easily overtook Schaus in both the squat and the deadlift, and outlifted her in the bench press by 2.5 kg, leaving Schaus with a sliver medal finish in the 3-lift powerlifting event.
Schaus commented, "even though it was my first silver medal, it was my biggest victory to date. I had two personal best lifts and a personal best total. I am thrilled with my 292 lb squat because I know my 300 lb goal is just around the corner." Her goals for Nationals in the spring is to surpass 200 lb in the bench press and 300 lbs in both the squat and deadlift.
If Schaus is invited to compete with Team Canada again for the Commonwealth Championships, she admits that fundraising will be necessary. "You can't get much further away than Fiji. We already have plans for a golf tournament next summer. The support I received in 2005 was amazing and hope that the community will continue to be behind me all the way."
Schaus took home a bronze medal in the squat at the 2005 Commonwealth Championships in England last year and came 4th overall in the 60 kg or under 132 lb weight class. It was her first ever international competition and also the first ever Commonwealth Championships in the sport of powerlifting.
