Silver For Local Powerlifter at Commonwealth Championships
Krista Schaus has returned from the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in Christchurch New Zealand with an overall silver finishing in the 67.5 kg class. In individual lifts, she earned a gold and two silvers with a 90 kg (198 lb) bench press and a 150 kg (330 lb) squat and deadlift to give her a 390 kg total (858 lbs). This beats the 34 year old competitive powerlifter's previous best total by a whopping 57.5 kg. Her results in Christchurch should move her into the top 20 of the Canadian Powerlifiting Union's (CPU) Top 100 female powerlifters.
Her competition hailed from Papua New Guinea (PNG) and New Zealand. Serena Perry of New Zealand chased Schaus throughout the entire competition but fell short with a total of 380 kg. Linda Pulsan of PNG earned the gold overall with a 427.5 kg total.
Schaus was thrilled with the community support both before and during the competition. She received messages and emails in New Zealand from complete strangers from the Haldimand area advising that they were proudly cheering her on. The business community also stepped up with strong support particularly Body Waves Fitness in Caledonia and Robert Dickie Carpentry out of Cayuga. "I was very pleased to be able to represent Canada and my community well at the Commonwealth Championships.", stated Schaus.
The local powerlifter plans on taking a short period of time off and enjoying the holidays with her family before beginning preparations for the CPU Nationals April 9th to 13th in St. Catharines. Krista's 17 year old daughter, Kristina, will be competing with her Mom for the first time at the National powerlifting championships in Niagara. Kristina qualified for the Nationals at the Ontario Powerlifting Master/Junior Championships in London on December 15th with a 285 kg total.
The certified strength coach and owner of Defining Edge Fitness is still booking speaking presentations for community groups in exchange for a donation which will go towards her travel expenses.
