Female Powerlifters Compete at Nationals in Niagara
On Thursday, April 10th three local female powerlifters, Paula Wright, Susan Abbott and Anita Santos competed at the Canadian National Powerlifting Championships in St. Catharines, Ontario. These three local athletes belong to Coach Krista Schaus's /Defining Strength & Power Team/, a group of all female competitive strength and fitness athletes.
Wright, an OPP Constable from the Cayuga area, competed in the 52kg Masters (over 40) class and took home a gold medal with the help of a personal best squat attempt of 220 lbs and 248 lb deadlift, giving her the title of Canadian National Powerlifting Champion. Wright's first place finish at Nationals automatically qualifying her for Masters Worlds in Palm Springs, USA in September. Wright trains five days a week with strength coach and champion powerlifter, Krista Schaus, and personal trainer and fitness competitor Carrie Misener in Caledonia. Future plans for Wright include The Canadian Law Enforcement Games in Cambridge this June where she will represent the Ontario Provincial Police competing in powerlifting.
Pulling a personal best 297 lb deadlift pushed Susan Abbott into a silver medal placing in the 82.5 kg Open class at her first National powerlifting competition. Abbott, a certified personal trainer and strength coach from Hagersville, has been competing in powerlifting for 3 years now and also competes in Strongman events. As Defining Strength & Power's assistant coach, Abbott coached our third local powerhouse Anita Santos towards her personal best deadlift of 303 lbs and 275 lb squat in the 67.5 kg Open class.

Susan Abbott
Santos, a Simcoe resident, has been coached by both Schaus and then Abbott since 2005 and shows great promise in the sport of powerlifting. She has only been competing for a year and according to her primary strength coach, Abbott, "Anita has alot more in her yet. She is just tapping into her strength potential". Schaus credits the seemingly impossible strength of all her female athletes to three key things - ultra clean nutrition practices, consistent and continual hard work and dedication, and setting their mind up for success commenting, "if you do not have a strong mind, you cannot be at your strongest physically. The body follows the brain."
Krista Schaus and Susan Abbott will be presenting at a *Women's Strength & Beauty Seminar* hosted by elite level bodybuilder and physique coach Frances Manias in Dundas on June 21st where women will learn more about how to eat and exercise to develop a good looking, high performance physique.
