Cayuga, Ontario – Haldimand resident and former Norfolk County OPP officer, Krista Schaus, is raising funds for the upcoming 2005 Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in Wansbeck, England. The event, being held from September 5th to 12th is fast approaching for the 6 year veteran of the sport and funds are required to cover the many costs of competing overseas including travel expenses, and the costs associated to training and competing at a high level such as equipment, food and supplements and recovery methods like massages and saunas.
The 32 year old powerlifter hopes to bring home a medal from the historic competition next month, being the first such event in the sport of powerlifting, but she is first looking for community support to help her make the costly trip to the U.K.
A yard sale is being held at her home, 295 Link Road in Kohler (near Cayuga) this coming Saturday August 13th starting at 7:00 am. Treasure hunters will find everything from antiques and collectables to nearly new children’s toys. Organizers of the sale boast, "No junk here!" Come out to Kohler and support a local athlete and find a hidden gem.
"Lifting for Loonies" is also underway at Body Waves Fitness in Caledonia, where Krista works as a personal trainer. For a minimum donation of $1.00 you can purchase a paper barbell that you can write best wishes for Krista on before it is posted at the gym. The messages will help motivate Krista and inspire her to train even harder! Drop into BodyWaves to support this fundraiser.
Letters are also going out to businesses and individuals who will be able to sponsor Krista. If you are a business owner or generous individual who would like to help send Krista to the Commonwealth Championships were she will represent the Haldimand, Norfolk area, Ontario and Canada, you can contact Krista at (905) 772-0751. Sponsors will be recognized through the www.athleticedge.ca website. Special thanks already to Body Waves Fitness and Lafarge Canada Inc. for their support!
Krista commented that "the support of the community, friends and family helped me become a National Champion at the 2000 Canadian Powerlifting Championships. Now I’m hoping their support will help me take my achievements as an athlete to the International level."
Krista hopes to surpass all of her personal best lifts at the upcoming Commonwealth Championships and your support can help her achieve that goal!
