I began competing as a Fitness Model in the fall of 2008. A large part of my competitive success has been a high adherence to a strong set of principles – an exercise of discipline in following what I feel is the right path. The Defining Edge (DE) contributed a large part of defining what that path is.
In the Beginning
My early training sessions and eating habits were shaped from predominantly popular fitness magazines. Depending on the source, this can contain some great information … and also less than optimal protocols, especially in light of the vast genetic differences we all possess. I trained as much as I could at school and ate tons of meat and carbs (mostly chicken and rice/pasta) every 3 hours. A lot of my time was devoted to learning accounting principles and interpreting the Income Tax Act on the road to obtaining my CA designation. I was doing what I thought was the best, but wasn’t get the level of results I knew I was capable of. The thoughts of being competitive were seemingly hopes and dreams, and with the help of DE this became reality.
The Transformation
I must give much credit to a mentor figure who goes by “Sonny”. After I finished school and came back home he introduced me to T-Nation, where I first came across articles written by Krista Schaus, owner and operator of Defining Edge. Time was passing and I finally made the call to compete in the fall of 2008, although I lacked the necessary knowledge to maximize my abilities. After another friend had some success through DE, I thought I would try an assessment for myself. Using the cutting edge technique from Biosignature Modulation, my profile revealed I had a huge excess of cortisol and was carb intolerant.
The Cortisol Connection
I had great discipline when it came to training and dieting, although I lacked taking as much care of myself on the recovery side of things. Late night training, poor sleeping patterns, and basically no rest protocols led to an excess of cortisol – that nasty hormone that makes you shudder at its name. It helps us wake up in the morning, but constantly elevated levels wreak havoc on the body.
Under recommendations from DE, I changed my training schedule – training for shorter, more intensive sessions more frequently and placing them earlier in the earlier in the day. I also began an effective supplement strategy to help me better adapt with stress, and implemented a number of rest/recovery methods. I include things like Epsom salt bathes, massages, and (FIR) saunas on a regular basis. With cortisol leading to an excess of fat, especially around the midsection, identifying and developing strategies to correct this problem definitely contributed to my success on stage. My front abs pose would not have been the same!
The Carb Connection
The other large factor contributing to my fat loss revolved around my carbohydrate intake. I don’t handle carbs very well; despite eating what I thought were “good” carbs. Nutrient timing protocols, along with considerations for the type and quantities of carbs became a focus. I became “fat-adapted” in good time to start my competition diet, which played a significant role in shaping my overall physique.
Time for Some Posedowns
After DE, I was much better equipped to pursue the challenge of hitting the stage. Krista was still in her first year of competing as a bodybuilder, and suggested seeing Frances Manias for posing advice as well as dialing in my physique for my shows. I greatly enjoyed working with Frances and am very thankful for her efforts. It was great to receive compliments of having some “kickass” poses. Krista also recommended contacting Karen Phillips of
KHP Designs who designed my fantastic suits and costumes. She was a joy to work with and helped create an American Gladiator suit at my Halloween show that allowed me to walk away as the Best Costume Winner. Once again DE’s recommendations delivered!
Showtime!
DE played a large part in preparing me for a strong competitive debut. I placed 2nd in two shows with Ultimate Fitness Events (UFE) last year, and really enjoyed my time with this great athlete and fan focused organization. This exposure lead to opportunities in a photo shoot with Inside Fitness Magazine, allowing me to be a part of the fast-growing Canadian publication, and in working with renowned photographer Korby Banner. I can’t wait to prepare for my next set of events and continued teamwork with DE!
