A Fitter Family Reunion

With my daughter gearing up for her end of school exams, I am reminded that summer is just weeks away.  Summer is a great time to get together with old friends, nearby neighbours and unite the extended family to catch up on what’s new.

Unfortunately, reunions and summer gatherings are often serve as an opportunity to eat large amounts of unhealthy food and partake in one too many sweet cocktail or frosty ale.  You know what the picnic table usually looks like – chips and cheesies (don’t forget that irresistible snack mix), too good to pass up nachos and cream cheese / cheddar cheese / salsa concoction and jumbo hotdogs!  And what are we doing when we sit around eating and drinking? Likely discussing stress-inducing topics such as land disputes, global warming and rising gas prices You can feel yourself gaining 5 pounds just thinking about it!

We often leave feeling stuffed, less than sober and more stressed than when we got there. Have we simply forgotten how to have fun, focus on the positive and eat real food?  No, we just need to be reminded that there are alternatives that are healthy for the body and soul.

I remember many summers in the backyard in Fisherville whether it was a baseball team gathering, the Cayuga OPP summer party or our annual family reunion, there was a lot of good food and fun that many long time Haldimand residents would recall from their own gatherings.  I specifically recall competitive games like the 3-legged race, wheelbarrow race and water balloon toss.  These were good times.

So let’s get back to old fashion fun with friends, family, neighbours and co-workers that is also good for our health.  Bring back the days of hoss and eucre, cannon ball competitions in the pool, a game of 21, kick the can or how about the string/phone book game (remember that one?).  Substitute high calorie food and drinks with healthy yet equally yummy choices like red wine spritzers, home made ice tea or lemonade, chicken on the BBQ, devilled eggs, veggies and dip, a big watermelon from the market or strawberries picked fresh from the field!

And let’s talk about nothing but good times of yesterday, today and those that are yet to come.

Wishing you a healthy and happy 2007 summer season!
